. . . S o f t c o r e . . .

So I have really gotten back in action after all of that icky health stuff... I'm so excited that Fall is here, and I have started knitting my Christmas presents for the year already. It was thrilling to wear a sweater for the first time this season last week! (It's Florida... We hardly EVER get to do that!)

I'm finally starting to feel back on track after everything, have started to work on art again, and I'm almost done with the ridiculous amount of cleaning that this place needs to undergo before it can be back to normal. It's amazing how much of a mess you can turn your place into after being sick for a couple months and unable to really clean it!

I wanted to show you some of the friendly creatures that have been populating my life, all created in the last six months or so...

Mushroom Nurse was so much fun to make! She had her debut as the first plush creature I've ever offered on Etsy, and she was really proud of that fact. She promptly hopped off to her happy new home, and she is having tons of fun with her new owner. (Rumor has it there may be a Mushroom Policewoman in the works. And maybe a mushroomy little criminal to go with her...)

I attempted needle felting for the first time awhile ago (probably more than 6 months ago, actually), and the first project I like to make in any new medium is, of course, a miniature replica of Miss Ruby Roo herself:

What do you think of the resemblance?

(She can't help it, she just *has* to play with her food before eating it!)

Next up is this little teal crocheted bear:

This picture is a bit blurry, but you get the idea...

And finally, this teeny tiny jointed teddy bear made from felt! This one took forever to make since it was so small, and the whole time I was making it, I was dreading the part where I'd have to make the joints. It turned out that the joints were really easy to do, and they were actually my favorite part of the whole project.

That's all for now! Tonight I've got two silkscreen classes to teach, but until then, it's more cleaning and hopefully some drawing time, too...

Amelia's Magazine and Other Mostly Good Things

First, the good stuff...

I keep forgetting to mention this on the blog, but if you pick up the latest issue of Amelia's magazine, you'll see my illustrations of a bunch of animals around page 11 or so! I got my copies in the mail a few months ago and was super excited about it, and I recently noticed that Barnes and Noble stores here in the states started stocking them last month. It's my first international publication, so I'm really thrilled, and I love, love, love their magazine. If you haven't seen it before, it's a British magazine that is about fashion, music, and art. Check it out if you get a chance, and in the meantime, you can look at the Amelia's website, go to links, and there I am! I'm so excited to have been part of such a cool publication.

I also wanted to show you some pictures of amazing stuff that has arrived in the mail over the past few months...

This was a wonderful trade with the lovely KnitOwl, who makes awesome plush and other goodies, all available in her Etsy shop. She is really nice and so much fun to trade with, and I love reading her blog, too!

I also received some truly amazing stuff from the wonderfully talented and friendly Megan of Moogancreations! She sent these as a get well present after my surgery, and they couldn't have arrived at a better time. She was able to put a smile on my face from all the way across the country!

She sent some awesome original artwork:

She also sent a fantastic grouping of stuff to entertain me: her handprinted lino block cards, plush team stickers and goodies, a cute little notepad and stationary stuff, and a really great issue of ReadyMade magazine (actually, the best issue of the magazine I've ever seen!).

Megan is just too cool for words! I can't even explain how much her surprise present meant to me - thanks for being so kind and for being such a wonderful friend, Megan!!!

And just to update you:
The bad stuff...

I have been missing in action yet again, so of course that means I haven't been feeling so great... I just started up teaching classes again the past two weeks, but I've also been battling a sinus infection for the same two weeks, so it hasn't been easy. The whole reason I had the surgery was so that I'd stop getting these awful things and being sick all the time... Ugh, I hate to be so complainey and whiney on my blog, but I just wanted to let you know what's been going on lately and why I haven't been updating my blog or my Etsy shop. It's so annoying - and just when I think I am getting better...!!

The lovely LaurenSmash tagged me to tell 8 random facts about myself, and I totally forgot about it (due to being in sickness hibernation) until I saw MarmeeCraft's cute little post today. Oops!!

So here they are...
My Eight Random Facts:

1. I forgot how to swim. I thought it was supposed to be like riding a bike...but apparently, it's not! I just tried to the other week after a looooong time of not swimming. And, yeah, I forgot...

2. I always have watermelon gum in my purse. Always. If you ask for gum, and I say I don't have any, I'm lying. It just means I was saving that last piece for myself!

3. My eBay "Watched Items" list is currently populated by large lots of vintage knitting needles. I am in need of lots of different sizes, since it's a fairly new hobby for me, and I figured vintage would be a fun way to start my collection.

4. I love reading emails from Freecyle.org... even if it's not something I'm interested in, I like to read about all the random things that people are swapping.

5. It's really cold where I work...and I love it! Since it's always so HOT outside (it's Florida...), it's a nice change of atmosphere, and since it is always *too* cold, it means I get to wear cute sweaters and knitted stuff, which would otherwise lie in my closet, dormant and unloved, in the summertime. (I'm here now, in the art museum library. There's no one in here now, so I can play computer.)

6. I have an irrational and large vintage coat collection! I simply can't pass up a good coat. It's silly because it's always so hot here, and they take up soooo much room in the closet. At least I have this freezing job! :)

7. My kitchen is painted bright, crayon box green! My living room is light aqua blue, and my room has one hot, hot pink wall.

8. I was in the middle of reading "On Beauty" by Zadie Smith (awesome author!), but I somehow lost the book before I could finish. Hopefully it will turn up... I can't stop wondering what happened to those characters!

That's it for now, but hopefully I'll be back later this weekend with a picture-full post, since these last two have been picture-less! (They were posted from work.)

Hope you all had a fun week! I have been feeling even better than last week, despite it still being an up and down sorta thing. I have some stuff ready to post in my Etsy shop next week, yay!!

I missed you like crazy!

Ok, I think I'm back for good this time... At least I hope so!

I have been waiting to post until I had something good to say, but I have been having a really rough time with everything, and my recovery is not going so well. I'm kind of scared because since my nose problems are s0rt of strange (non-allergic rhinitus), they weren't sure the surgery would help everything. Lately, I've had some of the same symptoms and problems that I had before the surgery, exactly the stuff the surgery was supposed to fix, so it's kind of worrisome... I'm supposed to give it more time and hope it will get better, but it's really frustrating, especially considering how rough the surgery was on me - I am still weak and get short of breath from it even though it's been a month!

So that means I'm still too weak to pick up a silkscreen, and that really stinks!! I have been missing making artwork so much, and I have been missing all of you and your blogs, Etsy, and all of the emails that make me so happy! I haven't been on the computer much at all, because I get depressed about it and feel like a huge part of my life (and happiness) is missing since I can't do the things I love so much. I feel so bad that I've been out of touch so badly, but I want to get back into the swing of things again and at least try to get on the computer more and maybe post some things I made before the surgery. Sorry to be missing in action for so long - I hope that doesn't make anyone want to stop being my blog friend! :) You guys really mean the world to me, and I can't wait to catch up on reading everyone's blogs.

The past week has been better - I am still low energy and tire easily, but I can do some crafty stuff, which I hope to share with you soon. I've been mostly concentrating on knitting and crocheting, since it doesn't take up too much energy and is really calming to do. Making things with yarn just has this really calming quality to it, and I really need it considering all of the stress I have been under lately! I have been working on learning to knit better for a looooong time, and I can finally say I have mastered the skill and am loving it and doing better at it than I ever have before. It's crazy, and I've been mildly obsessed with it since it's all I can really do creative-wise right now.

Since this post is totally devoid of pictures (how boring!), I thought I'd share some random and fun links with you:

Crazy-Awesome Rowan Knitting Patterns!
Buri Palm Tree Fiber Animals!
Shop Orange!
How to Make a Cute Makeup Bag! (I haven't tired this one yet, but I hope to soon.)

Ok, everyone - that's it for now, but I hope to be back very soon with some fun photos. Don't give up on me! I will be back in full force soon, I hope...
