This is a little painting I did last night before bed. I was too lazy to get up and get some brown and black paint, so I decided to use the brown and black woodstains that were already on my desk for shading and details. It was surprisingly nice to work with the stains (kind of like fluid acrylics), and I liked the results. Might do it again on purpose...

I just finished the above book, called "Love Hurts," because the person in the photo on the cover has had her head chopped off - ouch! All in the name of love... Maybe her photo is going in a locket that will be close to someone's heart.
I'm sitting at my dining table, which is covered in bits of paper, bookmaking how-to books, acrylic paint, mod podge, paint brushes, gesso, newspaper, and previously bound book and sketchbooks. It feels good to make a mess and make some art. I just finished making another book, but it will be drying all day, so I won't be able to share it until tomorrow. I have taken a few days off from listing and making things for the Etsy shop in order to get back to bookbinding (it's been months since I've made a book!) and making things for myself (it's also been a while...). I thought I would be rusty when it came to making books, but it came back pretty quickly, even though I couldn't find the instructions for the type of book I wanted to make, so I just had to wing it.

Remember that big dream that I was hoping would come true in the last post? Well, it looks like it IS going to come true after all - hooray!!
I am very excited to tell you that I will be taking a workshop with my #1 favorite artist/author, Sabrina Ward Harrison, this May in Prince Edward Island! I can't wait!! Just a few days ago, I was making my Mondo Beyondo list, and one of the items was, "Take a Class with/Meet Sabrina Ward Harrison." Two days later, I was browsing through my Google Reader, and I saw a post from Papaya's blog that talked about an upcoming workshop Sabrina is teaching! I thought, "This was meant to be," and I decided to jump in with both feet and sign up right away.
I think I first found Sabrina's books when I was a senior in high school. At that time, Spilling Open was the only one out, and I don't remember how I stumbled upon it, but once I saw it, I knew it would be an instant favorite. Sabrina's art and honest deep-down-digging writing was unlike anything I'd ever seen in print form, and it was super inspiring. It also made my own art journals feel a little more validated, making them more of a priority in my life. I eagerly awaited the publications of her next three books, loving each one of them very much. I am so excited to be taking a class with her and can't wait to share photos and stories with you about the trip... May can't come soon enough!!
I feel like I have been doing a lot of this "jumping in with two feet" thing lately. At the beginning of the new year, one of my goals was to focus more on my art and my Etsy shop, so I decided to take two days off of work a week to work on those goals. To be honest, right now it is not paying off financially, but I hope that with time and with persistence, I will find that I made the right choice. If not, I can always go back to full time at work, but I hope it doesn't come to that. The good thing is, I am SO much more happy now that I am working at my day job less, and that has to be worth something even if the Etsy sales aren't quite there yet.
Speaking of Etsy, I will be posting new goodies throughout the day today, so be sure to take a peek at the shop... lots of new clothes, including the buffalo t-shirt below:

Up above is a sneak preview of my new "Hells Yeah!" Ballerina t-shirt, which will be a party of Wednesday's shop update.
I am kind of in a "Hells Yeah!" kinda mood today since I have gotten so much done! It's my day off from work (day job), so I am spending it focusing on Etsy and making stuff. I burned a bunch of screens and printed a ton of t-shirts and totes with images including sewing machines, bison, moustaches, and more! I even cropped a bunch of photos on Photoshop, which I usually hate doing. Hopefully I will have a huge shop update prepared for Wednesday night. In the meantime, there are some new whale shirts in the shop.
Other Random Goodness:
*I'm really close to having a big dream of mine come true - keep your fingers crossed! I can't tell you what it is yet, but it *may* happen this summer...
*Been watching some really good/thought provoking movies lately: Blue Valentine, the Social Network, The Shift, and more!
*Had a little housewarming party the other day, and it was wonderful! So much good conversation, good food, and a good movie (In the Realms of the Unreal, about the art of Henry Darger).
*I signed up to take an online painting class with two of my favorite painters, Lisa Congdon and Mati McDonough. I need a little nudge to get me back into painting again, and I think this will help do the trick. I can't wait until it starts! Get more information here: http://www.getyourpainton.typepad.com/
*I've been drawing and drawing and drawing...t-shirt designs for my day job and for my Etsy shop. It's funny how resistant I am to using the computer for making/editing the drawings... I still insist on sharpies and white out, always!
That's all for now; gotta get back to work. But I will post again on Wednesday when I have some goodies ready for the shop update.
Until then, I hope your week is off to a great start!

Shop Update: Totes and Bunnies!
Today has been a great day off from my day job, and I've gotten so much accomplished! I cleaned the house, ran errands, and took about 150 photos for the Etsy shop! It was a fun and productive day, and after the shop update I plan to start working on my new book/zine/journal/comic thing that I hope to finish by the end of the year. I'm still working out the final details on its theme, but I hope to have it solidified soon so I can really start rolling!
Hope you had a great day too! :)

Some preview photos of the new shirt that will be in my shop soon! All hand drawn by me, yay. It's so much fun to print a new design for the first time and to think that someone somewhere will wake up one morning and choose to put on this whale shirt, wearing it proudly throughout their day.

Today was: sleeping in an hour later than normal, getting paid to spray paint things at work, seeing my puppy at lunch, going to art supply stores for my boss, getting out of work early, dinner with a fun friend where we split the BIGGEST DESSERT I’VE EVER SEEN, and now another friend is on their way over to my place, where I have lotsa wine and art supplies…

BIG shop update tonight at 8pm EST: necklaces, magnets, new prints, and handspun yarn!
It's all the goodies I have been meaning to post for quite some time now.
I had time today due to one of my New Year's resolutions: to devote more time to my Etsy shop and make it (and art/crafting in general) more of a priority in my life. In order to accomplish this goal, I decided to take 2 days off a week from work to focus on art. Since I'm not paying rent anymore (I'm living in a house now.), I don't have a huge budget and can afford to not work so many hours at my day job. It's the first day of my new plan, and already it has been working out wonderfully! I woke up at 6am because I was so excited about my day off from the job and working at home, ha ha.
Some of my other goals for the new year? Get back into painting. Draw/be creative daily. Make 1,000 Etsy sales. Teach an online screen printing course. Spend more time with my baby dog and my parents. Take more photographs...
Some of these are pretty lofty goals (1,000 sales?!), but I am determined to make my dreams come true this year! Wish me luck! What are some of your goals for the new year?
